A precision light test should be performed to diagnose solar urticaria. This involves exposing the skin (or portions of the skin) to light of various wavelengths to establish which wavelength range is the action range and to identify potential inhibiting ranges as well. Where allergic mechanisms are suspected, a photo patch test is done on a portion of the skin (back, buttocks) not normally exposed to sunlight.
